Hello! I would like to explain the korean cultural thing hidden in the squid game. I believe it makes the squid game more fun! I will continue to update.

9/30 - #1

1. Piggy-bank

You must have seen the scene where the prize money was put in to the pig-shaped barrel.

In the old days, many people used to put their money into a piggy bank.

I remember this red piggy-bank. I used it 30 years ago. 😊

It made of plastic or ceramics.

There are many cute looking piggy banks these days.

I’m now using this cute piggy-bank. But the number of coins does not increase well.

In the old days, I used a lot of cash, so I had a lot of changes as well. However, because of the fintech, many people do not need to bring cash. It means do not make change. So many companies that made piggy banks went bankrupt. (It’s a sad story)

2. Future, Gift ??

As you already watch the Squid game, Lee Jung-jae as Seong Gi-hun (from Ssangmun-dong 😊) is a gambling addict who works as a chauffeur and lives with his elderly mother. The drama portrays him as an uneducated person and person who lost job as well.

In Korea, Future (from finance) and gift has the same pronunciation. Because of that he could not understand why the gift makes him beggar. So, he said “How much gift did you buy?”

3. No.067

That’s the sad part cause many people could not feel the intonation of north Korean defector. As you may know, Korea is a divided country because of the Korean war. Because it has been divided for a very very long time, not only the ideology but also the culture is different.

Also there are huge differences between the South Koreans and the North Koreans like the accent and the words. For example, North Koreans do not use English and try to translate to Korean language.

So foreigners will have a hard time recognizing this. It’s a bit disappointing because it’s a part where you can feel more fun than it is expressed through subtitles. I think it’s more different in English accent between the UK and the US.

4. The roses of Sharon have blossomed. - AKA red light, green light?

The game and the rules we played in childhood are the same. If the player moves when tagger looks back, he is eliminated. Of course! we don't kill loosers...

They got tagger doll from the Jincheon Macha Town.

Yea, it's hard to get there. Too far from Seoul.
